Shockwave Therapy

Therapeutic shockwave treatments were introduced as a safe, non-invasive medical treatment for kidney stones over 20 years ago. It was during this time that positive side effects were noticed, such as increased bone healing and accelerated tissue healing. Now, in the modern medical age, the benefits of shockwave therapy have been refined, giving birth to Radial Pressure Wave Therapy. Benefits of Radial Pressure Wave Therapy:

  • Increased cell healing
  • Increased blood flow
  • Reduction in pain
  • Increased tendon healing

What conditions can it be used for?

Radial pressure wave therapy is indicated for the following applications in the lower limbs:

  • Heel pain – plantar fasciitis (fasciosis)
  • Achilles tendinitis (and other tendon issues)
  • Chronic pain
  • Shin splints
  • Myofascial trigger points – knots/tender spots
  • Activation of muscle and connective tissue e.g. increased blood flow/healing

How does it work?

An acoustic wave generator is created in the hand held applicator, which is delivered into tissue through compressed air pulses. The pulse radiates and expands into the tissue, allowing it to target both superficial and deep tissue.

Is there any pain during and after treatment?

There may be discomfort felt during treatment, however most patients are able to tolerate it well. The pressure and intensity of shockwave can also be easily adjusted to suit patient tolerance, whilst still maintaining a therapeutic effect. Many patients feel immediate pain relief following treatment, however, patients may experience minor soreness 2-5 hours post treatment.

What treatment plan do I need?

Each treatment session takes approximately 20-30 minutes. Patients usually require 3 to 5 sessions at 3-7 days apart. This is followed by a review after 3 months.
